Governor Eric Holcomb has proclaimed November 10-16, 2024 as Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana. Winter in Indiana presents a range of challenges, including freezing rain, sleet, substantial snowfall, ice, strong winds, and severe cold temperatures. Such conditions can significantly disrupt transportation, power supply, heating, and communication systems, leading to the closure of schools, retail establishments, and workplaces. To effectively prepare for winter weather in Indiana, consider the following advice:
Stay Informed: Before heading out, consult local news sources and the Indiana county travel status map for up-to-date information on conditions
Drive with Caution: Adhere to lower speed limits, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and exercise heightened vigilance in areas with limited visibility.
Develop an Emergency Plan: Outline evacuation routes and ensure your disaster kit is easy to transport.
Prepare Your Vehicle: Have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic and equip it with essential emergency supplies.
Winterize Your Home: Keep your home’s heating system set to a minimum of 68–70°F.
Dress Appropriately: Wear warm layers and avoid using space heaters and fireplaces for safety.
The National Weather Service issues various alerts for winter weather events:
Advisories: Issued when wintry conditions are anticipated, though not severe enough to warrant a warning
Watches: Issued when conditions are ideal for a significant winter storm
Warnings: Issued for severe winter weather events, indicating that travel may become difficult or impossible.
If you find yourself in a winter storm, it’s essential to stay dry, shield exposed skin, and seek shelter. If shelter isn’t available, consider constructing a lean-to, windbreak, or snow cave for protection. Additionally, you may build a fire for warmth and to signal for help.
